| Notes | 'Microtones in North Korea' By oboist Catherine Pluygers Enterprising oboist Catherine Pluygers has just returned from the 'April Spring Arts Festival 2004', which is held annually in Pyongyang the capital city of DPR Korea. 'This is a huge international arts festival representing music, ballet and circus drawing artists from all over the world and is a major event in the calendar of Pyongyang the capital of this most secretive of countries. The whole city turned our to greet us and I have yet to stop marvelling at this experience. As I strongly believe that art transcends politics I was moved and delighted to be invited to participate in this festival and plan to return in 2006 with some selected fellow artists.' To their surprise and enjoyment vast audiences and television were treated to 'Contemporary Music for Solo Oboe by Women Composers'. 'Perhaps this is not quite what the organisers expected but this is what I had been booked to do and is what I am currently touring and promoting.' Four contrasting programmes were performed including music by Priaulx Ranier, Ruth Gipps, Eilzabeth Lutyens, Ruth Sidwell, Julia Usher, Morgan Gordon and a microtonal piece especially written for Catherine by Jane Serter. 'I announced Jane's piece with the words "and now for something completely different" and now can truly say that I am amongst the first few British Artists to be invited to North Korea along with Terry Noel (BT Melodians Steel Orchestra) and Suzannah Clark (operatic soprano), and am the first artist to present contemporary classical music there. |
