| Programme Note | The opening declamatory Prelude is based on a rather abstract arrangement of mirror inversions of the 12-note row on which the work is based. The Theme presents the material in a much more accessible form which is audibly present in the earlier variations. The middle variations obscure this relation, but it gradually returns as the later ones lead cumulatively towards the Postlude in which the opening recurs, followed by a condensed version of the Theme. |
