| Programme Note | Refrains VI is the latest in a series in which the idea of a continuous movement containing sections of contrasting character punctuated by recurrent refrains is exploited. Duos for Cor Anglais and for clarinet and piano, a 'Kegelstatt' piano trio, a string quartet and a work for large improvising jazz orchestra have preceded the present work. Here, the opening refrain is a bold unison for the entire ensemble. Though altered in various ways, subsequent appearances are no less direct, mostly orchestral unison, but in one case a simply harmonised solo for alto flute. I think of these refrains as a way of orientating the listener (and the composer!) within a more complex discourse in which the interval pattern of the refrain takes on a wide variety of melodic and harmonic transformation. |
