| Programme Note | The work takes the form of a theme (taken from Britten's third string quartet) with five variations and a postlude. The various mooods of the music range from the quietly lyrical atmosphere of the opening and the Adagio of variation 3 to the lively chirpiness of variations 1 and 5 and the off-beat humour of variation 2 (Valse excentrique) and variation 4 (March excentrique). The piece ends with a meditative reprise of the opening theme. Wassily Kandinsky's painting Small Pleasures was the inspiration for the work. |
