| Programme Note | In my 'Percussion Concerto' I use the idea of the soloist gradually emerging from the orchestra to take on the role as the main protagonist in the musical drama. By being featured as one of three timpanists at the beginning of the work, the soloist starts off as part of a team. That role, however, gradually changes as the part increases and diversifies to include music of extreme virtuosity on a vast array of instruments. The work is obviously a display piece but it also has intricate symphonic development and follows the form of a traditional concerto. The fanfares (heard at odd intervals in the opening Cortege) are a sort of leit motif which gradually dominate the music and in fact take over in the final Aubade - heaving the work to its final bars. The quiet middle movement, Nightscape, has a theme (first heard on flex atone and vibraphone) which takes its shape from the standing stones on Callanish on the Island of Lewis (where the work received its premiere) seen at a particular angle silhouetted against the night sky. |
