| Programme Note | This overture was commissioned to commemorate the centenary of the launching of the ship. The music is not intended to be programmatic, but to protray the drama of apprehension and discovery as a ship heads into the unknown. The opening clarinet solo, however, is based on the traditional words of a launching ceremony; but it further serves as a motto theme for the whole work, appearing in many mutations. After a rousing send-off the various adventures of the `wonderful little ship' are suggested, as it battles against sometimes formidable odds. |
