| Programme Note | Working Through Versions for Viola & Cello, with a choice of options and sizes: 1. full length option 1 2. 1/2 length option 1 3. full length option 2 Duration of full length pieces: about 10 minutes 'Working Through' holds the record for being the most re-arranged of all my pieces. It's different each time it appears, and there have been about 20 other incarnations ranging from keyboard solo to 8-guitar group. The structure of the piece is quite simple. The idea contained in the first 2 bars occurs 48 times, each occurance being similar to but not identical with all the others. Think of it as being like a gem with 48 facets each of which you inspect in turn. Alternatively, in keeping with the psychoanalytic nature of the title, think of the first 2-bar phrase as the 'insight' which is 'worked through' in 48 different situations. |
