| Programme Note | This piece is in 10 short movements, each one bein a chimæra in the sense that it combines diverse components. Unlike the chimæræ of mythology which were usually made of several parts joined together, each movement has just two elements, one of which it shares in common with the preceding movement and one with the succeeding movement. I have imagined them as being like composite animals and have provided Græco-Latinate names to describe each one's unique combinations of attributes. Unhelpfully I provide no translation. Have our dictionaries ready! However here's a clue : the elements resemble hairs, spikes, scales, feathers and rough callus. The work is a complete recomposition of a less ambitious 4-movement work for amateur orchestra which I wrote in 1970 and which won a Dublin Symphony Orchestra prize, sponsored by RTÉ. I wrote this version in 1988 and revised it slightly in 1999 and again this yea, 2005. Here are the movement titles : 1 HIRSU-HISPIDUS HORRIDUS 2 ICHTHUOPILUS PSEUDO-SEBACEOSUS 3 PLUMICHTHYOIDES PARTICULO-PECULIARIS 4 SERRAROPAPPUS AROPAPOPPAPUS 5 PISCARUGA LUGUBRIOSA 6 SPINICHTHYOSA PUNCTI-ACUMINATI-HORRIDI-ODIOSA 7 PAPPOSPINOSA AMBIGUOSO-DIFFICILIS 8 PILOPENNATUS OTIO-ANSERINUS 9 RUGAROCRINIS CRYPTOCONFUSIVUS 10 SPICO-SPICOIDEOSERRARISSIMUS SIMPLEX |
