| Programme Note | Programme Note: There are squares on a canvas. They are of different sizes (different note durations). At first, they have the same colours (the same notes) but with different strengths of shade (different registers) Then, there are squares with new colours (new notes). All the squares have one set of opposite sides which are decorated (different notes) and one set of opposite sides which are plain( one sustained note). The squares gradually merge in the middle of the canvas. Then they break up. A very large square is then being painted and while this is happening, there are smaller squares inside it. There follows three squares with thick frames ( all the instruments playing chromatic scales simultaneously) Here - in the second and third squares - both the "plain"sides and the " decorated" sides have extra colours (brief melodies). The piece ends with a few broken bits of the squares (octaves). Performance Note: Phrases - The curved line has been used only sparingly - primarily to help with the musical sense. Accidentals - The usual convention of notating an accidental only at the beginning of the bar has been followed. However, some extra precautionary accidentals have been notated - often at the first repeat of a note and sometimes in brackets. |
