| Programme Note | Harp and Carp is the fifth Old Kirk Concerto written for players of Kirkcaldy Orchestral Society. The series is named for the orchestra's home and includes concertos for clarinet and trumpet as well as a Concerto for Orchestra. The very first in the series was written for the solo group of the five members of the Randall family in 2019. Harp and Carp is for solo cello and takes its inspiration from the Scots ballad Thomas the Rhymer. When the eponymous hero meets the Queen of Elfland she enjoins him to follow her, saying, "Harp and carp, Thomas, alang wi' me," (play and sing along with me). She shows him three roads which are the basis for the concerto's three main sections. |
