| Programme Note | PROGRAMME NOTES We are plunged into a sad and lonely world. Where is the "tune"? It is nowhere - and everywhere! Each instrument has one of the four versions of a 12 note row. Each instrument stays with this version - the lower instruments move up in pitch, while the upper instruments move downwards. The row itself has an OVERALL upward trajectory. The instruments begin far apart and very gradually move towards each other - 4nally merging and "disappearing" into one note in the middle register. After this, the intruments continue their upward journey to the top of their ranges. Finally, the music "disappears" into space. PERFORMANCE NOTES Phrasing - The curved line has been used sparingly. A phrase lasts for all 12 notes of the row for each instrument. The new phrase usually begins with a new dynamic. Later in the piece - where there is no curved line - the notes should all be played legato. Mostly, the curved line is employed to help with the musical sense. Accidentals - The usual convention of only notating an accidental once at the beginning of the bar has been followed. However, there are several extra precautionary accidentals, as the piece is atonal. Where there are repetitions, the extra accidentals have been notated just for the 4rst re-iteration. |
