Notes
Programme NoteThe piece begins with the music moving from outwards to inwards. The clarinet and the right hand of the piano move from high notes to notes in the middle range. The bassoon and the left hand of the piano move from low notes to high notes for the bassoon - and from low notes to the middle range for the piano. The dynamics move from loud to soft and the note durations move from long to short. This process is then reversed. Everything moves from inwards to outwards.

The music then slows and the idea of "inside out" is now that of music moving up and rather than from side to side. The clarinet and piano move upwards towards notes of short duration. This is reversed by the bassoon and piano moving down, beginning with notes of short duration and going to those of greater length
