| Programme Note | A large diamond is gradually being mined from the earth. Then its facets are polished. The outer diamond shape (facet) has three more diamond shapes within it. The innermost diamond shape is formed by the 2nd violin and viola. Outside of this, the next diamond is made-up of the oboe and trombone. Outside of this, the shape is created by the flute and bassoon. The outermost shape consists of the 1st violin, cello and double bass. The points where the shapes meet are at first blunt (accentted top and bottom notes) but then these get smoothed. The piano is the polisher! Sometimes, the materials the polisher uses are emollient and sometimes abrasive. After each facet is polished, it announces its new, shiny self. The shine is created by various means such as repeated notes, glissandi, trills, fluttertonguing etc. In a brief ending, the piano gives the final flick of the duster and the higher instruments display their brilliance. |
