| Programme Note | Echoes of the Sea God is a movement from my little Chinese opera for solo percussion, Thrashing the Sea God. It tells the story of a woman who has been deserted by her husband for his lover. Running to the Sea God, where they once pledged their love, she reprimands the God for being unconcerned about her husband's infidelity and, in a state of shock and grief, she kills herself. The little opera was first performed by Colin Currie at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield in 2000. It was revived in 2012 by Joby Burgess ad given a new production by Kally Lloyd-Jones at the Tete a Tete Opera Festival at Riverside Studios, London. The revised marimba part is edited by John Burgess. (John McLeod) |
