| Programme Note | The piece begins with three motifs. Each motif is for a different group of instruments and has a distinct character. All motifs move upwards. The first one is for piano alone. It emerges from a low register and plods steadily. The second is for string quartet and is passionate and declamatory. The third is for violin and cello and limps upwards rather pathetically! When each theme gets to its third round, it is extended. Then all the instruments come together and continue the journey upwards. The music arrives at a strange new land. The scenery is at first very sparse and bleak. Then it becomes denser with a jagged landscape. Strange animal like moanings are heard. There are distant fragments of melody. The piece finishes with a weird dance. Using the fragments of melody previously heard, the dance plays high in the sky. |
