| Programme Note | The piano is divided into its seven octaves. The piece begins with the right hand playing in the highest octave with notes of very short duration. The left hand plays in the very bottom - 7th - octave and the notes have seven times the duration of the top octave. The right hand then moves down to the next octave and has notes lasting twice the duration of the top register. The left hand moves up an octave and has notes of six times the duration of the original music. The pattern is repeated, the left hand moving upwards in each octave with notes of increasingly shorter durations, while the right hand moves downwards with notes of increasingly longer durations. At bar 91 the hands cross over, the right hand takes over the movement upwards, while the left takes the movement downwards. The music proceeds like a drunken person - staggering, swaying, swerving, changing direction, stopping - and starting again! |
