| Programme Note | The starting point for this ballet was a 15-minute orchestral piece called Le monde des ombres which I wrote in 2005 and which was performed in 2009 by the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra in Dublin. In early 2020 I revisited the work, remembering that its composition was accompanied by a strong visual impression of spectral characters emerging from and disappearing into shadow, changing and exchanging characteristics with each appearance. With this in mind I discussed with the writer/dancer/choreographer Natasha Gerson whether the piece had the makings of a ballet. She enthusiastically took on the project with the result that Ombres was extended to become the first scene of a ballet, completed by the addition of two newly composed scenes. A short outline scenario for the ballet exists but is not included here because it may well be modified and most certainly will be greatly fleshed out as the ballet is created in the rehearsal process leading up to performance. |
