| Programme Note | This song was written in 1985 as part of a series of workshops based on the Beatitudes; the eight blessings spoken by Jesus known as the Sermon on the Mount. These workshops represented the main focus of an initiative called ‘First of the Month’ which comprised youth fellowship organisations throughout Edinburgh and East Lothian. On the first Sunday evening of each month, these groups would meet in the halls of South Leith Parish Church to explore one of the Beatitudes through a range of creative activities and experiences. ‘Thy Will Be Done’ is based on the eighth Beatitude, “Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”. It is recommended that the piano accompaniment should be played as written when either the vocal line or flute part are not being featured – i.e. bars 1-3, 19-21, 37-40 and 74-77. At other times the accompanist should feel free to improvise on the given chords. While the song is intended to be sung by a soloist and a backing vocalist, it could easily be sung by a group of singers or a two-part choir. |
