| Programme Note | The pitch material for this piece consists of two main ideas - a melody in the minor mode and a 12-tone row. The melody is first played on the oboe in notes of long duration. The oboe repeats the melody which rises and gradually has notes of shorter duration. The strings begin with the row in rapid durations. Their music gradually slows into very long lines. The upper and lower strings part company with each other after the beginning - both in their starting points and also in pitch. The second violin is a maverick with the melody backwards in short durations and then forwards in pizzicato! As the piece progresses, the by now familiar melody is announced by the oboe and first violin, but has a loud dynamic only at the beginning and then fades out, parting company with itself. Other parts of the melody come to the fore. The music sounds as if it is disintegrating. The oboe and first violin have a "parting of the ways" short duet together. There is a minute of slow lyrical music at the end. The music on the strings is gradually completely transformed. The oboe has various versions of the row and then its music is also transformed. |
