| Programme Note | Suppression is expressed in many different ways. For instance, at the beginning the main melody played by the brass is "pressed down" on by the other instruments playing music that keeps moving lower. When the music tries to "bounce up" again, it is "squeezed"(glissandi on trombone and clarinet trapped between the notes on the piano. Melodies are begun, but not always allowed to flower. The main melody is broken up and different pieces of it assigned to each instrument. The pieces are pasted on top of each other and worked towards a climax. Quiet slow music on the piano suggesting something hidden is ornamented once again by pieces of melody. Rhythms become very complex, so that a regular beat is "compromised." The piece ends with jarring octaves on the piano breaking into the steady music on the other instruments. |
