| Programme Note | During the first lockdown in the UK due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I invited members of Lauderdale Community Choir to write down a word, phrase or short paragraph that seemed to encapsulate their thoughts and feelings at that time. My intention was then to arrange the words offered as a narrative for a piece of choral music. No fewer than 29 people submitted their own verbal contribution. I sought to include at least one word from each person in the final lyric. The words were very moving; understandably, a sense of sadness permeated people’s experiences. One word, in particular, featured: missing. Yet I was also struck by the sense of gratitude that was apparent; this included appreciation for the local community, the strength of family bonds and a greater awareness of nature. Therefore, despite the feeling of loss that accompanies the experience of missing, this particular word also contains the letters of another word: sing. |
