| Programme Note | I am emulating the great masterpiece 'The Creation' by Joseph Haydn. He used a German translation of the King James version of the bible. I have followed suit by directly setting the same version, only, of course, in English. Haydn also included some psalms and some of Milton's 'Paradise Lost', but - for the moment - I am just setting Genesis. Each verse will be an item on its own, with its own instrumentation. Before the word 'created', there is a short, fugal section on the strings. This is because the fugue is often thought of as a perfect example of musical 'creation'. -Jane Serter, August 2019 |
