| Notes | The Sonata is in three movements and was written in 2015 for Lana Trotovsek and Yoko Misumi. |
| Programme Note | The Sonata exploits Hearn's interest in the extended or 'stretched' octave, where harmony can become ambiguous, with the upper part often a semitone sharper than the lower part, especially when combined with the Lydian mode. The second movement uses a theme written in the 1950s when the composer was in his teens, but which was never used. Here it is gradually built up from fragments heard at the start. At the end of the Sonata, themes from all three movements are brought together, often exchanging their styles and rhythms. |
