Programme NoteThis is an attempt to portray in music a geometric shape that changes. The squares are seen as staying in their one position in space as they change (as it were in two dimensions), so that there are two horizontal lines and two vertical lines. The horizontal lines are represented by sustained notes which at first do not expand. The vertical lines change as the music moves downwards and then upwards with the same music in reverse. Gradually, the intervals between the notes expand - a semitone at a time - and the durations become longer. The horizontal lines then begin to expand, the intervals gradually increasing in a similar manner to the vertical lines. The lines begin to expand in a less ordered manner with jerky rhythms.

Towards the end of the piece, some of the opening material is used in a few bars of a lyrical nature. A short ending has the whole shape stretching rapidly in opposite directions.
