| Programme Note | In this piece, the bassoon takes on the role of Caliban from Shakespeare's play, The Tempest. The play tells the story of Duke Prospero, who has come to a remote island to usurp Caliban, the dark, earthy, native son of a witch-hag, from his kingdom. Prospero's jester, Trinculo, calls Caliban a 'strange fish' - hence the title. [*Instructions for helicopter noise (Bar 25): Play the lowest B flat possible, (without the right hand little finger key depressed), with a slack embouchure, an 8'4" tube length, tight diaphragm muscles and a wide open reed.] |
