| Programme Note | There are pyramids in a desert landscape. Perspective means that they appear to be different sizes. Small ones are in the distance and large ones nearer the front. In the foreground, are two massive pyramids. Detailed texture can be seen on the facing walls of these pyramids - represented by the repeated notes in different rhythms on the strings - and only a semitone in pitch between the instruments. What appear to be small pyramids in the far distance - represented by flutes and clarinet - are sometimes lone buildings and sometimes grouped together. in between, are pyramids of different sizes, using larger intervals as they are seen to be further back and with quicker rhythm as each pyramid reaches its top. The solo oboe represents a sad Jewish voice telling of the misery of slavery in Egypt. Often, the voice is almost obscured by the power and size of the pyramids. At the end, the oboe and its accompaniment is clearly heard for the last minute of the piece. |
