| Programme Note | The original title for this piece was "Extension and Decoration" I had the idea of one instrument playing a few notes, to which others are gradually added. The other instrument decorates with quicker notes. I then had the concept of a building which struggles to be constructed. There are angry notes and sad melodies. Bureaucracy is being fought against! The music gradually rises in pitch. As each "layer" or "floor" of the building is nearly completed, the music tries to say level, as expressed by the instruments sustaining long notes and moving only slightly in pitch as quarter tones are employed. The music describes the building reaching the top by very high notes. The very last bar suggests everything might be falling down again! The building - as with life - is full of uncertainties however much we try and plan. The melodic material has an "oriental" feel. Perhaps the building is a temple to hope? -Jane Serter, November 2013 |
