Notes
Programme NoteFrancesco Mancini [1672 - 1737] was a popular Venetian opera composer. Other works such as his sonatas and concertos were composed in a style derived from that of Corelli. The theme on which 'A Mancini Tapestry' is based, is the Andante from his Concerto XVII in A Minor.

Completed in April 2007, 'A Mancini Tapestry' is a work for string quartet, composed specially for quartet playing friends and lasts ten and a half minutes. Its style reflects the players' liking for fugues and baroque music. There is also a passing rhythmic reference to the Tangos of Piazolla and an avoidance of harmony which is too extreme.

The 'Tapestry' of the title, refers to the Mancini theme interweaving as a contrapuntal thread in the musical texture. Beginning unadorned with simple harmony, as in the original, it gradually becomes more integrated as the work progresses.

Structurally, the work consists of 16 variations, which continue without a break. Variation 13 is a fugue complete with counter subject, episodes and strettos. The fugue subject comes from a simplified inverted version of the original, with repeated notes removed, much like one would construct a serial tone row.
