| Programme Note | The 2011 multi-media piece Éanlaith Strae / Stray Birds was premiered by the Donegal Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Víctor Yélamo in my home town of Letterkenny. The group gave the piece a second performance in Dublin later the same year. It was Víctor who suggested to me the idea of making a suite from the hour of music the piece contains. I decided to take some of the 7 songs from the piece as my starting point, in particular one called Sreanga uile, because the players seemed fond of it. My first attempt used only 3 of the songs, Sreanga uile, Lá geal gréine, and the title song Éanlaith strae an tsamhraidh. The first two of these are included in this longer suite, with Ó! Compántas, a long slow one called Santaím Inis na Laoithe, some fleeting allusions to Éanlaith strae an tsamhraidh and a longer development of Sreanga uile. |
