Programme NoteIntroduction

For some time, I have thought about writing down my ideas and thoughts about philosophy and religion and the great questions of life. However, I didn't think anyone would be interested in reading them! These ideas are unlikely to be original, as the subjects would have been dealt with by human beings throughout the ages. Then the thought occurred to me that if I could set the ideas to music, it would make a far more interesting creation. Therefore, I have devised some "verses" which I have tried to keep fairly short. Each one constitutes a "song". The concept seemed to lend itself to the song-cycle form.

Why?

The inspiration for this song is an experience that happened while walking along the beautiful River Cara to the beach in Carradale, Argyll, Scotland. I was reflecting on the big questions of life and - quite suddenly - I became tearful as I realised that I - and every other human being - would die without knowing the answer to these questions. It made me very sad, as I would like certainty and answers to all questions!
