| Programme Note | This early work, composed between May and August 1958, is in memory of Suzanne le Comte, a young friend who died tragically in 1958, the same year the composer's father died. Vaughan Williams' song "Linden Lea" was the model for the theme of "Folk Melody" which is not truly a folk melody at all. "Elegy", deeply felt, is surprisingly intense and dissonant for the time it was written. "Epilogue", mainly pizzicato and muted throughout, with sections for solo viola, is more restful, a kind of wistful leave-taking, and, after a brief outburst, subsiding gently at the close. This work was first performed and broadcast over Radio New Zealand by the Alex Lindsay String Orchestra in 1960. |
