| Programme Note | This short piano piece is composed in memory of Dianne Barbara Moreton, who died of cancer in Auckland on the 11th July 1998. There are four short sections: Chimes and the passage of time In the choir Out and about Epilogue: At peace The main musical material comes from a Traditional Scottish Folk song and the variations based on it. This seems fitting as this musical tribute originates in Scotland. The subsidiary idea of chimes is used for its soothing hypnotic effect, associations with church and prayer, the harmonic ambiguity cause by the unique effect of bell overtones, as well as the passage of time suggested by the Westminster chimes striking each quarter. The hint of Messaien harmonies is intentional and a passing reference to his "Quartet for the End of Time". The individual titles are self-explanatory. As the funeral service had ended with the final chorale from Bach's St John Passion, it seemed appropriate to present the Folk song in the guise of a 4 part chorale. As the music fades away, The finality of the actual words sinks in, Time stretches into the future, Past the final bars, Beyond the initial grief of parting. |
