| Notes | A celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Rabindranath Tagore Translation: Gabriel Rosenstock Visual Art: Ian Joyce To Paul Joyce |
| Programme Note | Rabindranath Tagore is a major figure in the rich cultural heritage of India: he won the Novel Prize for Literature and was a prolific writer of poetry, plays and songs (which include the national anthems of India and Bangladesh), as well as being a painter. He traveled extensively and knew major figures around the literary world including W B Yeats and Pádraig Pearse. He supported the movement for Indian independence on which subject he had strong views which diverged from those of Gandhi, whom he also knew. In 2011, the year of the 150th anniversary of Tagore's birth, Gabriel Rosenstock started to make an Irish translation of "Stray Birds", a 1916 collection of Tagore's poetical aphorisms. These consist of about 250 short, intense 'brilliances' on the subject of man and nature. |
