| Programme Note | ALTOVISTA dates from October 2008 and was composed as a kind of homage to Rachmaninov's Vocalise which the composer performed around the same time. 'Alto' is the French for 'Viola', hence the title, which could roughly be translated as the 'Musical sense as perceived by the viola'. Vocalise, originally for voice, has appeared in numerous incarnations, notably for viola and cello, and has remained popular over the years. It has a yearning quality about it which is most appealing, yet formally, the work is very free, as though improvised. Like Vocalise, ALTOVISTA retains its free improvisatory quality, its mood very similar as well. The rhythm of the opening three notes and the long sustained note at the end form a subtle link. The warm chromatic harmony is a further link though the contemporary style is naturally very different. CHEZZ Tillywhally 30 October 2008 |
