| Programme Note | This short work is for double bass quartet and composed specially for the 2007 Double Bass Competition organised by BIBF and lasts around four and a half minutes. Of course, Pachelbel never wrote and 'Eroica'. The title is a humorous reference to the last movement of Beethoven's great work where pizzicato strings are heard before the emergence of the main theme. Although there is no direct quote as such, the astute listener will hear Beethoven's rhythm reproduced when Bass I enters with its theme before the work proceeds on its individual way. Pachelbel's theme is treated freely in as much as spacing and rhythm and explored. The original last four bars or two, where notated in crotchets. The present work sometimes stretches the theme several bars longer, appearing as a reference point at the beginning of a bar, before indulging in figurations. Each of the four players are treated as equal individuals having a turn at the theme which is free to occur in the upper parts rather than restricted to the bass line. The single constant remains of the original in its D major guise with passing use of chromatic ornamentation as in jazz. CHEZZ Tillywhally 29 October, 2007 |
