| Programme Note | Musacorn began life as a piano piece under the title 'From Small Acorns'. As the name would suggest, the musical argument is concerned with growth. The present work follows the original closely, the main modifications being those of tempi; the idea of orchestrating Acorns was purely to explore the possibilities open to the composer in moving from the piano idiom to full orchestra, an interesting exercise undertaken as a means of maintaining one's touch with the orchestra. Formally, there are three contrasted sections which continue without a break; slow, slow, fast. Beginning and ending softly, the mood is improvisatory which gradually tightens up as the work proceeds and gets into its stride, Unity should still be sensed by the listener even without access to the score, as thematic patterns emerge. The interval of a second features prominently. There are several big moments, most notably an intense lyrical melody for the full orchestra as a climax shortly before section three with its faster tempo. |
