| Programme Note | The piece opens with fast music in which two different registers display contrasting characteristics. The low voice has busy chromatic utterances, whereas the high voice sustains one note, inflected with quarter tones. The two voices stutter and train to approach each other, but not very successfully. The music continues with a slow lyrical section. Here the thematic material is more clearly and directly stated. The fast music returns. Now the two voices approach each other more successfully. The low voice gradually rises in pitch, while the upper voice gradually falls. Each voice also takes on the characteristics of the other, as they eventually meet up in a middle register. Jane Serter December 2009 |
