| Programme Note | The sad sighs refer to the melodic material, given in its most straightforward form to the oboe. The grains of sand have many references. They are described by the soft repeated notes. Quarter-tones play a major part in conveying a "grainy" effect. The closeness of the notes thus achieved, should result not only in new colours for each instrument, but also new harmonics between the instruments. This leads directly to the notion contained in the familiar saying that "the whole world can be seen in a grain of sand." Jane Serter September 2010 |
