Programme NotePandura Turning, completed in November 1989, is for viola and piano and was specially composed for Andrew Lees. The Pandura of the title is a leaf which is violin shaped and catches the light as it turns. As the music unfolds, changes of mood and texture evolve in a continuous flow, just as the colour of the leaf is constantly changing as it turns.

Two musical ideas give unity to the piece as a whole. These are the rhythm of the reiterated phrase in the opening bars and the interval of the major 6th turning in on itself, both appearing during the viola solo which opens the piece.

Like the solo violin at the beginning of Ravel's "Tzigane," the viola begins on its own.

Pandura Turning is in four sections which are continuous, with a breathing space between sections 2 and 3, and lasts about seventeen minutes.

Technical features are the wide range of the solo part, the use of double and triple stops, col legno and pizzicato, glissandi, tremolo and harmonics. The piano accompaniment uses the whole compass of the keyboard, complex harmonies, poly-harmony, mixtures of diatonic, whole tone, chromatic and pentatonic combinations, and chord clusters.

Pandura is also available in a version for full orchestra.
