| Programme Note | In December 2008 our friends James & Magnus moved into a new house. They pointed out that the address was an evocative one, and indeed every line of it is like the subtitle of a scene in a film. I immediately set to work to realise this filmic scenario, the shade of Franz Waxman hovering over me and giving more or less sensible advice, some of which I accepted. Thanks Franz, I appreciate it! I haven't yet visited the murky regions detailed here, but I have no doubt that my depiction of the fairytale landscape between the exotic citadels of Manchester and Sheffield is near enough to reality. In this film scenario we swoop with the birds around the slender turrets of a cote on a sheer cliff face, pan towards an ominous hill in the distance, beyond which is the obscure region of an unknown netherland, then cross with difficulty a ford guarded by an angry troll called Grindle (he thinks he owns the place), and finally make it to the valley which seems to offer some hope after all the Sturm and Drang. |
