| Notes | for the Sapphire Trio of Montana |
| Programme Note | In May 2008 I had the pleasure of meeting the Sapphire Trio from Montana and hearing them perform : Maxine Ramey playing the clarinet like a poet, Jody Graves taking the piano by the scruff of its neck, and Margaret Baldridge with enough strings to her bow to hold the whole thing together effortlessly! A couple of months later, this piece appeared in my head. It's a dramatic confrontation between the ddreamier and more assertive aspects of the ensemble, the Eurebius and Florestan elements. Of course, I don't for one moment imagine that conflicts, such as the one depicted here, ever disturb the professional and personal equanimity of the trio. But if it did ever happen, Margaret would be the one to mediate, as she does in this piece. |
