| Programme Note | Pictures and shapes have long been the starting points for several of my works and in many cases have influenced much of the structure, colour adn atmosphere of the music. In my orchestral piece The Gokstad Ship (1982) the measurements and design of this Viking burial vessel dictated a great deal of its form as did the colour and content of I have long admired the drawings and paintings of my composer colleague Haflidi Hallgrimsson and his pithy, surrealistic and succinct comments on certain unusual scenes and situations became the starting point of this work. I have tried to extend the experience by attempting a musical, and in the epigrams - a verbal impression of each one - hopefully, not to be taken too seriously! |
