| Programme Note | I wrote this little piece for Carol McGonnell. It pursues my current obsession with speech rhythms, this time looking at the beautiful French language. The words given to the speaker are from the André Gide novel Les Faux-monnayeurs, in a key scene in which a relatively minor character Armand, reveals that despite his veneer of cynicism he is a secret romantic. He spies on his sister and friend, whose liaison he has helped to engineer, and he does it not in a prurient way but with a reverence which is almost religious. The moralist in Gide overcomes the sensualist and leads Bernard away from his error. Gide disapproves, but I don't - I'm with Armand! |
