| Programme Note | There is a visual image behind Taking Shape, and that is as it should be in a piece dedicated to a visual artist, the painter Stuart Morle. I imagine a form 'roughed out' on the canvas, then gradually gaining definition until (in bar 176) the finished result is achieved. Each of the 4 instruments has a limited set of notes from which it makes its simple tunes. The intervals between these sets of notes are different for each instrument, but they are similarly proportioned - almost as if they represented different visual perspectives on the same subject. The music has a folk flavour to it, which possibly gives some clue as to what the finished "picture" might represent. |
