| Programme Note | Every winter, upper respiratory infections cause havoc in the concert halls of the land. If you have a cough, why does it always come on in the quiet bits? Why do you sffer the agonies of the damned trying to hold it in, when the other person makes no effort at all and always, always coughs right in the middle of your favourite bit? - that's the person sitting right behind you and coughing into the back of your head. In this piece, the piano adds its own coughs to an otherwise healthy sequence of chords. If anyone in the audience has a cough, try and do it during the loud hacking bits, not the nice quiet bits, please. It's dedicated to pianist Fern Bartley, who managed recently to perform in public despite having a terrible cough, and heroically refrained from causing a disturbance. |
