| Programme Note | The Celtic calendar divides the year into two halves - light and dark. It begins with Samonios, the start of the dark part of the year, around the end of October. As nature dies back for winter, the Celts believed the divide between the living and the world of the dead was at its weakest, allowing prophetic messages to be passed from the spirit world to their priests. Féile na Marbh (the Feast of the Dead) was celebrated at this time - a tradition later Christianised as All Hallows' Eve. This piece is an imaginary part of that ritual, beginning as darkness falls. The first performance was given by Lancier Brass at the Wigmore Hall, London. |
