| Programme Note | For many years I have admired the fine baritone voice of Tomás Ó Súilleabháin and had in mind the project of making new arrangements of the 8 songs on his 1958 vinyl LP in which he was accompanied on the piano by Seán Ó Riada. Somehow that never happened, perhaps because it felt too much like hubris. However I recently approached the same songs more indirectly by writing an orchestral music theatre piece dramatising the late-night recording session which produced the 1958 recording. Since it would not have been appropriate to use Seán Ó Riada's arrangements, I set the songs afresh in the context of the larger piece of music. From that, it was a relatively easy process to make piano reducctions of the score, and this is the result. |
