| Programme Note | The original version of this piece was for the Dublin duo consisting of my old friend the pianist Margaret O'Sullivan Farrell and her clarinettist husband Peter Farrell. The idea was for the melodic lines of clarinet and piano to be "braided", weaving around one another, neither one ever becoming more prominent. The other aspects of the piece were structured loosely serially, and that is what gave me the idea that further "braids" could be added - in theory, of course, this could proceed to the point where all 12 notes of the Western chromatic scale were present in vertical cross-section at every moment of the music, but I've restrained myself from doing that (so far). Instead I introduced just two extra parts, and in this version the texture is thickened and then varied. The ideal is still that each "braid" should be equal to all the others. |
