| Programme Note | This short piece is a tribute to the Austrian violin virtuoso Max Rostal. He championed the music of his contemporaries, particularly Bartok, and as a teacher he was an enthusiast for scales - I learned this from one of his pupils, Hector Scott, for whom I wrote the piece. Hector has an extraordinary series of photos of Max, and it was while looking at these photos that the idea for the piece formed in my mind. The series of scales which is at the core of the piece is also quoted in my viola concerto, "Voilà". |
