Programme NoteThis piece for brass quintet is a companion piece and 'spin-off' of a longer piece for wind quintet, called 'Ceol Chrann na Gaoithe' in Irish or simply 'Wind-Tree' in English. The longer piece was to be - we had hoped - for indoor performance during the celebrations to mark the opening of the Fintry wind turbine, and this shorter piece, related harmonically to the longer one and apparently summarising its structure without repeating any of its music, was intended for the open-air ceremony under the turbine itself. When the indoor idea was dropped I immediately set about beefing up the bras piece, allowing some of the implicit ideas from Ceol Chrann na Gaoithe to become explicit. In particular I have imported the "big tune", heard first here as a horn solo and again even more prominently towards the end of the piece, and have embellished the music with some of the "fluttering" and "rotating" ideas from the larger piece.

I am immensely grateful for the patience and generosity of trombonist Lance Green and trumpeter Bede Williams who gave me a lot of valuable practical advice on the gentle art of writing fro Brass quintet.

The piece was performed by the Alba Quintet in the open air to mark the opening of the turbine at Earlsburn Wind Farm on 31 May 2008.
